Nottingham - A community Fun-Fair. The spirit is not dead yet.

Sherwood Rise Community Fair

Keeping up the community spirit is difficult in a society where moving homes is so common. When you are in your 30s and you moved more than three times, you are not likely to feel the community spirit of your locality.

The Tin Forest

So, the true magic and a trick is to keep a community spirit in a truly medieval manner ( in a positive, enchanting way) in a place where most of the households are on the 'move' - in and out. And this is what one can experience in some parts of England. Truly amazing, fan loving fairs.

A variety of things to see, touch, eat.

On a one sunny September afternoon we heard a rumble from a nearby 'green' place. Curious, we stuck out our noses along with the rest to see what's the noise all about. We have lived on the street for only two months now (moving in and out is our speciality).

Just round the corner is a very small Hedley Villas Park on the Sherwood Rise area in Nottingham. Small but pleasant, with a touch of a forgotten mystery, we liked to walk around there, being so quiet and well kept. To our surprise the place was transformed overnight in something that the senses could hardly believe.

As we learnt, this lovely event in and around one of Nottingham's hidden gems, the Hedley Park, is an annual affair. This was the tenth festival and it took a space of the cobbled streets around the park, the neighbours' front gardens, back yards, garages and outbuildings.

Garage Stage

Organised by Sherwood Rise Residents’ Association it gathered a diverse crowd with a truly bohemian feeling. Something we did not expect! Wherever we turned our sight there was something interesting going on. The place was literally buzzing with variety of activity. The inventiveness was truly astonishing. We have not long seen so many relaxed and happy people with very little alcohol involved.

The famous Robin Hood himself showed up (WHAT IS THIS PHOTO ON LEFT ALL ABOUT?)

Robin Hood Visit

There was of course plenty of live music, rockers, an acoustic stage, a spoken word on a garden stage, a choir. We could hardly keep up with what was going on.

Live Band and garden tools on the fencing

The importance of food is obvious, but to witness such a professional pizza team in such a small-scale event was sort of a wonder.

Load, loads of craft stalls, great activities for kids, everyone was welcome to chill out in own fashion and style.

Time to relax

The event's grand finale was a lively procession - all performed and prepared by people who live nearby. It was truly a unique community event with a special atmosphere and extraordinary fun.

This is one of Nottingham's friendliest and most interesting neighbourhoods.
