Our Place in Space

Image
Our Place in Space Quite remarkable 8.1 km scale model of the solar system animated Liverpool City Centre from 14 October to 6 November 2022.  With distance comes perspective... It started from miniature of our Sun and Earth on Church Street, running down along it to the iconic waterfront, Albert Dock and then on a solitary path through the Trans Pennine Trail along the left north bank of the Rover Mersey. It ended with tiny Pluto at the Otterspool Promenade. A very intriguing walk. Quite peculiar indeed. Walking through the streets of Liverpool, first through a lot of dense crowd, similar to the solar system where the first planets a gather closer.  Being able to not only imagine the the scales and distances, but to experience it physically was a incredible eye-opener for many. What a tiny-tiny cosmic seed the planet Earth we live on really is. Just figure this out - the scale on that journey was 591 million to 1! At this scale the Sun is  2.35 m in diameter, the Earth i...

Liverpool Landmarks Tour (Part Three)

Image
Lets continue our walk...check where you are ;-) Finally, you got to the most iconic Liverpool Landmarks. Three Graces - Royal Liver Building, Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building. They have defined Liverpool waterfront for the last hundred years and the lives of many people around the world. They are on the list of the UNSESCO global heritage - as they truly served to change the lives of so many families.  Royal Liver Building  - the most recognisable and loved landmark of Liverpool. Its grand clock towers are crowned with the Liver Birds. They are named Bella and Bertie .  Bella looks out to the sea, to welcome handsome sailors and ships bringing wealth to the city. Bertie looks inland to protects Liverpool people or/and to see if the pubs are still open for the sailors. This is according to the local legend from the start of 20th century. The port is here no more, the sailors are gone, the pubs are closing down. Times are changing. As they have always bee...

Aachen - the first capital of Europe and its golden relics

Image
During the lockdown we went down the memory lane and computer photo files to bring back some memories of our past trips.   A very short stay in Aachen in 2009 brought us face to face with the place that started the concept of Europe. Aachen could have been named the first secular capital of Europe , with Rome being the religious one. Of course religion was at the heart of medieval Europe and Aachen cathedral  (above) was at its centre. But before we reached the cathedral grounds we had a walk around. The streets around the cathedral have still the old medieval layout and feel despite Aachen being heavily damaged during World War II .  Many buildings guide us through history with different styles and designs.  It is feels like being in a parallel Universes in the ancient cities of Europe. The old and new meet just a step away. And you can see that people had a quite different mindset, concepts and perception of the world, those few hundreds years ago.  Aac...

City of London Dark Towers

Image
Towering steep into the sky, narrowly built, gloomy, powerful, dangerous, emanating some dark energy.  They had started to be erected some 20 years ago, symbols of exponential power of money. Murky businesses are going on behind those glassy walls. Some led to the global financial crisis in 2008, dealing with - what Warren Buffet called - 'weapons of mass destruction' - derivatives and futures - tools in stock trading.  Through the power of money they forced technology to serve money grabbing purpose, using algorithms, Artificial Intelligence and 5G are able to run stock market transaction. Milliseconds are vital for their activities. Transferring money that the ordinary people cannot even and ever imagine. In truth, they run not only the economy but politics too. It was all down to them to give the go ahead with Brexit as presented in the excellent the Spider Web documentary . As clearly suggested, British Empire still operates under cover of those glass and steel towers. I...

Liverpool Landmarks Tour (Part Two)

Image
Continuing our walk just check where you are on the map...  We are passing  St John Gardens , landscaped from a former cemetery with  grand  memorial statues. You may want to peep towards  Queensway Tunnel , regarded as one of the great engineering feats. At the time of its opening in 1934, it was the  longest underwater tunnel in the world.  Just notice two statues overlooking the tunnel entrance, one is to Queen Mary and the other is to King George V . There were massive crowds at the opening, you me see the photos in many Liverpool pubs and other places.  A scene from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 was filmed in the tunnel, with Hagrid and Harry on a flying motorbike or something.  Also the chase scene for Fast & Furious 6   was shot here. Locals say it is haunted - many have seen a woman's ghost on a motorbike, or an old fashioned 1960's police car has been seen driving in the tunnel. Perhaps it a...
