Anfield Stadium - walk around

Image
A walk around the now-expanding Anfield Stadium can be exciting, especially before a Champions League fixture. We start our walk from Anfield Road towards the stadium. There were more passers-by on this day, not necessarily with an admission ticket (its hard to get one, you must be very lucky). Demand is far greater than availability. There is no indication that it will change soon :( even with the expanded Anfield Road stand.  Anyway, the area around the stadium is much better than 15 years ago, yet there are places that still needs revitalization. Abandoned terraced houses are haunting, with youngster hanging around. The neighbourhood, neglected for years, will not look beautiful overnight. However, it is worth paying attention to a few elements in the area. As you walk along Anfield Road, there are several buildings to note: Epstein House - the former home of the legendary Beatles manager, Brian Epstein. Brian’s grandparents, Isaac and Dinah Epstein, lived at the house for ove...

European Super Football League into the bin!

Image
What a heck of a mess it was! An idea that couldn't work. The response was immediate, widespread, fierce and unforgiving. European Super League - football games for the biggest and richest clubs in Europe supposed to be an elite league from where no one would be relegated or be promoted to... It would undermine the sense of the existence of national leagues such as a Premier League in England.  Fifteen "founding clubs" signed to it. Their 'greedy owners' , to be exact. They had fallen under absolute criticism from every possible side: UEFA, FIFA, football pundits, players, coaches and managers, politicians, and in a superb outrage - the fans and supporters.  'The Super League would kill the spirit of football in which competition and the pursuit of sporting success are the absolute basis .' - we could hear from everywhere. Liverpool FC fan clubs announced the withdrawal of the support for the club.  In front of the Anfield stadium , there were placar...

Liverpool FC - Premier League Title Celebration Without Supporters Sucks

Image
'They are privileged to play for you' - it is one of the most known Bill Shankly quotes about the relationship between Liverpool FC players and supporters - or how it should be. After a historic win 5:3 against Chelsea at Anfield on Wednesday, 22 July 2020, the Premier League trophy was officially raised... after 30 years - to the empty stadium. It felt sour. It should have been an iconic moment for the club, it turned ironic. The supporters are promised an official celebration but with the current climate and policies, this looks like in some months (years?) time. It will, of course, lose momentum. At least, on this historic occasion let's commemorate the football in Liverpool, before lockdowns , distancing and masks - from previous years. In the city centre, there are two main places where LFC fans launch their rave before important matches: Ranelagh Street, around Liverpool Central station, and Concert Square in the nearby Ropewalks. Remember to know the ...

Under the Blue Flag - Liverpool Everton FC

Image
You either Red or Blue in Liverpool. In this case, we follow the blue signs - the club's home colours are royal blue shirts and white shorts and socks. Nil satis nisi optimum  (Nothing but the best is good enough) is  Everton motto , seen on the Everton One store, opposite the stadium on Walton Lane. Goodison Park , home to Everton F.C. is located on the edge of Walton area. The ground was opened in 1892 - the first major football stadium to be built in England. It has now the capacity of nearly 40,000 people. In front of the Goodison Park is a statue of Dixie Dean , the most famous and cherished Everton player. He signed in 1925, and in 1927–28 season, he scored 60 goals , setting the record - still unbeaten by any other player.  Wayne Rooney , another famous footballer of our time, is a vivid Everton fan and his career in the Premier League started and ended in Everton FC. He was sold to Manchester United for a club-record fee of £28 million in 2004.  Everton w...
