'Refugees Welcome Here' in Liverpool

Image
After a recent outbreak   of hate  in  Knowsley, part of metropolitan Liverpool -  towards people coming to the UK to seek support and refuge - h undreds of Liverpooldians gathered on the plateau in front of St George's Hall (mid February 2023). This place has seen many gatherings - starting with workers rights and the Suffragettes in the early 1900s.   This time - showing the stance against racial prejudice and support for those who need to flee their homes because of the unfair, unjust and harmful politics - the asylum seekers, refugees and migrants. The protest was an answer to the infamous riots outside the Suites Hotel in the Knowsley area of the city on February 10, widely reported on national TV.   We do not know the details but it appears that some groups feel disadvantaged to the presence of foreign people living in a hotel while the folks living around Merseyside struggle to have the ends meet.  In some ways  - it is understandable and it has to be addressed in a

River of Light 2022 - Liverpool

Image
The River of Light - Liverpool Waterfront (21 October to 6 November 2022) In continental Europe, there is growing fear of power cuts before the upcoming winter and cities and towns are looking to save money on the street and  Christmas lights.  In Liverpool - quite the contrary. The outdoor illuminated gallery on Liverpool Waterfront returned - with a full glow. With more lights and illuminations than before.  There were ten artworks across a two kilometres loop, that featured light and sound installations from local, national and international artists. It was crowded, noisy and very cheerful. The interest of visitors probably exceeded the expectations of the organizers. A very successful event.  Proof, that - in times of the announced and impending crisis, inflation and budget cuts, Liverpool knows how to spend public money :-). The city has always been standing out in a sort of rebellious way - 'No one will tell us what to do and how to behave'.  Here - live fun loving peopl

Our Place in Space

Image
Our Place in Space Quite remarkable 8.1 km scale model of the solar system animated Liverpool City Centre from 14 October to 6 November 2022.  With distance comes perspective... It started from miniature of our Sun and Earth on Church Street, running down along it to the iconic waterfront, Albert Dock and then on a solitary path through the Trans Pennine Trail along the left north bank of the Rover Mersey. It ended with tiny Pluto at the Otterspool Promenade. A very intriguing walk. Quite peculiar indeed. Walking through the streets of Liverpool, first through a lot of dense crowd, similar to the solar system where the first planets a gather closer.  Being able to not only imagine the the scales and distances, but to experience it physically was a incredible eye-opener for many. What a tiny-tiny cosmic seed the planet Earth we live on really is. Just figure this out - the scale on that journey was 591 million to 1! At this scale the Sun is  2.35 m in diameter, the Earth is 2.2 cm, and

Queen is No More. Life in Service is Done

Image
Most of us expected it, but on the other hand, most of us tried to postpone this thought to "later". The thought that a day will come when we will wake up in the world when the Queen is no more . And what then? * Elisabeth II was with us for the whole of our lives. She came from a different time and had met many of the world leaders many times. All changing like in a kaleidoscope - for her.   As there are many people in the world, everyone's had a different concept and perception about her role on the world stage . Certainly she was one of the most important, visible players.  Bearing this in mind, with respect of the sheer volume of time and her perseverance - it was a hugely emotive moment. Many of us will remember exactly the place, the time, and our circumstances when we found out about the Queen's officially passing away. (Thursday, 8th September, 2022) This is our internal snapshot of history. It puts us in the ' Zeitgeist ' - the spirit of our times. A

Get to know Liverpool better - Penny Lane

Image
The area was made famous in the 1960s thanks to the Beatles' hit song Penny Lane, named after a suburban street located within Mossley Hill. Penny Lane runs between Allerton Road and Greenbank Road. The Penny Lane area is on the routes of various tour buses with thousands of tourists visiting annually. In July 2006, a Liverpool Councillor proposed renaming certain streets because their names were linked to the slave trade. It was soon discovered that Penny Lane was possibly named after James Penny, a wealthy 18th century slave ship owner and strong opponent of abolitionism. Ultimately, city officials decided to forego the name change and re-evaluate the entire renaming process. On 10 July 2006, Liverpool officials said they would modify the proposal to exclude Penny Lane. Penny Lane applies to the area surrounding the street of the same name. It was the location for one of the main bus termini for several routes, and buses with "Penny Lane" displayed were common throu
